Rev. Daniel Hensley, 85, of Morganton, NC, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

Born in Yancey County, NC on August 27, 1938, he was the son of the late Woodrow Hensley and Lee Ann Edwards Hensley. Daniel was a member of Nowlings Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. He pastored Friendly Freewill Baptist Church for 33 years, Morganton First Freewill Baptist Church for 2.5 years, and Robertson Creek Freewill Baptist Church for 3.5 years. He also retired from Emery Corporation. Daniel was a jack-of-all trades and could fix anything. Daniel oversaw multiple building projects that he pastored during his ministry. Daniel enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening.

Mr. Hensley is survived by his wife of 62 years and 7 months, Voneta Patton Hensley; daughter, Levonda Hensley Smith (Buck); sons, Danny Hensley (Sue) and Rev. Darvy Hensley (Angie); grandchildren, Brianna Craig, Calvin Metcalf, Brandon Hensley, Kaleb Hensley, Drinda Hensley, Trent Hensley, Tristian Hensley, Kyle Carswell, Matthew Carswell, Jessica Smith, and Jacob Hensley; twenty great-grandchildren; sister, Geraldine H. Norman (Charles); brother, Paul Hensley (Betty); and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Daniel was preceded in death by a grandson, Seth Carswell; two brothers, David and William Hensley; and daughter-in-law, Traci Hensley.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, May 4, 2024 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 5, 2024 at Nowlings Chapel Freewill Baptist Church with Revs. Jerry McClain and Darvy Hensley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
